B-The Anglo-Saxons ( 410 to 1066 )
-Who were the Anglo-Saxons ?
The Angle, Saxon, and Jute are known as the Anglo-Saxons. The Angles and the Saxon tribes were the largest of the three attacking tribes and so we often know them as Anglo-Saxons. They shared the same language(old English) but were each ruled by different strong warriors. They were warrior-farmers and came from north-western Europe (northern Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands). They began to invade England while the Romans were still in control. They ruled in England for about 500 years.
-Why did the Anglo-Saxons invade Britain?
Historians are not sure why the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. Some sources say that the Saxon warriors were invited to come to England to help keep out invaders from Scotland and Ireland. Another reason for coming to England may have been because their land often flooded and it was difficult to grow crops, so they were looking for new places to settle down and farm.
In the 8th and 9th centuries the people of Scandinavia, who were known as the Vikings, began to come to Britain. Anglo-Saxon accounts describe terrible Viking raids in which people were massacred, churches destroyed, and animals and precious objects stolen. By the end of the 870s, the Vikings occupied most of eastern England. Their territory was called the Danelaw.
C-The Vikings : ( 793 – 1066 )
Who were the Vikings ?
The Viking people came from three countries of Scandinavia: Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They were also known as the Norse people. They were mostly farmers, but some worked as craftsmen or traders. The name 'Viking'means 'a pirate raid'
Why did the Vikings invade Britain?
Most Vikings who sailed overseas were simply searching for better land for their farms. Their land was not very good for farming. Norway was very hilly, Sweden was covered in forests, and Denmark had a lot of sandy home land.
-The end of the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings :
-In 1066, the last Anglo Saxon king Harold died at the Battle of Hastings. William from Normandy ( France) became the new King and replaced all the Anglo Saxon lords with Norman ones and so brought Anglo Saxon and Viking times to an end.
